Description

What is Albendazole?

Albendazole is a broad-spectrum, synthetic benzimidazole-derivative anthelmintic. Albendazole interferes with the reproduction and survival of helminths by inhibiting the formation of microtubules from tubulin. This leads to an impaired uptake of glucose, a depletion of glycogen stores, and results in the worm’s death. Albendazole is used in the treatment of dog and pork tapeworm-causing diseases, including hydatid disease and neurocysticercosis. Albendazole may also be used to treat a variety of other roundworm infections.

Albendazole Uses

Albendazole is insoluble in water, so it is slowly absorbed in the intestinal tract. The original drug is converted into albendazole-sulfoxide and albendazole-sulfone in the liver, the former is an insecticidal ingredient. This product is distributed in the body in order of liver, kidney, and muscle. It can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and has a certain concentration in the brain tissue. The plasma concentration reached its peak 2.5 to 3 hours after oral administration. The concentration of the original drug and sulfone derivatives in the blood is extremely low and cannot be measured. The concentration of albendazole-sulfoxide varies greatly, ranging from 0.04 μg/ml to 0.55 μg/ml, with an average of 0.16 μg/ml. The half-life (t1/2) in the blood is 8.5 to 10.5 hours. 87% of this product and its metabolites are excreted in urine and 13% in feces within 24 hours, with no accumulation in the body.

Albendazol Side Effect

1. It can cause encephalitis syndrome, mostly delayed reactions.

2. A few cases have symptoms such as dry mouth, fatigue, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nausea and upper abdominal discomfort. However, they are relatively mild and can relieve themselves without treatment.

3. A small number of patients may have skin damage such as drug eruption and exfoliative dermatitis; white blood cells (especially granulocytes) and thrombocytopenia may appear.

4. In the treatment of porcine cysticercosis, the dosage is larger and the course of treatment is longer. The reaction usually occurs 2-7 days after taking the medicine, including headache, fever, rash, muscle aches, seizures, etc. These symptoms are the same as the death of cysticercosis. Factors such as protein are related, and corresponding measures must be taken (application of adrenal cortex hormones, lowering intracranial pressure, anti-epilepsy, etc.).
