Sodium salicylate and its uses

Sodium salicylate is the sodium salt of salicylic acid.It can be prepared by sodium phenate and carbon dioxide at higher temperature and pressure.Historically, it was synthesized by refluxing methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen) with excess sodium hydroxide.

Characteristic:

Sodium salicylate belongs to the family of salicylates.

Uses:Sodium salicylate

It is used medicinally as an analgesic and antipyretic.Sodium salicylate also acts as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), inducing apoptosis and necrosis in cancer cells. It is also a potential alternative to aspirin for those who are sensitive to it.Also used as a phosphor for detecting vacuum ultraviolet radiation and electrons.

Sodium salicylate

Sodium Salicylic Acid. As a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), sodium salicylate irreversibly acetylates cyclooxygenase I and II, thereby inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis and associated inflammation and pain. The drug also activates mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38MAPK), which induces apoptosis in cancer cells.

Synonym:

salicylate, sodium

Drug Entry

Is sodium salicylate aspirin?

Salicylates and NSAIDs

Sodium salicylate, the active ingredient in aspirin, is widely used for its anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and analgesic effects, as well as its inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation.Salicylic acid is one of the earliest known ototoxic chemicals.High doses can produce temporary tinnitus, vertigo and sensorineural hearing loss.Salicylates rapidly enter the cochlea, where concentrations in the perilymph are similar to those in serum.Hearing loss is usually mild to moderate and bilaterally symmetrical.

Why is aspirin called a salicylate?

This unique drug belongs to a family of compounds called salicylates, the simplest of which is salicylic acid, which is the main metabolite of aspirin.Salicylic acid is responsible for aspirin’s anti-inflammatory effects and may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer in people taking aspirin.

Are salicylates antacids?

As a derivative of salicylic acid, bismuth subsalicylate has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. It also acts as an antacid.

What are salicylates?

Salicylates are medications used to treat pain, fever, and inflammation.Salicylates are one of the oldest and most commonly used NSAIDs. Salicylates, such as aspirin, inhibit platelet aggregation and reduce blood clotting, thus preventing heart disease.

What’s the Difference Between NSAIDs and Salicylates?

While traditional NSAIDs and COX-2 inhibitors are considered more effective than salicylates in treating arthritis pain and inflammation, acetylsalicylate remains an option.Discuss with your healthcare provider which drug is best for you based on your medical history and risk factors.
