Progesterone Uses

Pharmacological action

Progesterone is a natural progesterone secreted by the corpus luteum of the ovary. It has a significant morphological effect on the endometrium stimulated by estrogen in the body and is necessary to maintain pregnancy. Its pharmacological effects are mainly:

①In the late menstrual cycle, the glands in the uterine mucosa grow, the uterus is congested, and the endometrium is thickened to prepare for the implantation of the fertilized egg. After the fertilized egg is implanted, it produces a placenta, reduces the excitability of the pregnant uterus, inhibits its activity, and enables the fetus to grow safely.

② Under the joint action of estrogen, it promotes the full development of breasts and prepares for milk production.

③The cervix is closed, the mucus is reduced and thickened, and the sperm is not easily penetrated; in large doses, the negative feedback effect on the hypothalamus can inhibit the secretion of pituitary gonadotropin and produce the effect of inhibiting ovulation.

Clinical Uses

Clinically, it is mainly used for habitual abortion, dysmenorrhea, excessive menstrual blood or hematuria, amenorrhea, etc. Oral high-dose is also used for diseases caused by insufficient progesterone, such as premenstrual syndrome, menstrual disorders caused by cessation of ovulation, benign breast disease, premenopause and menopause. Vaginal administration can replace oral administration, especially for patients with liver disease. It can also be used for prostate hyperplasia and sleep apnea syndrome.

Progesterone Uses

1. Prepare for implantation of fertilized eggs: This is one of the main effects of progesterone. In the later period of the female menstrual cycle, progesterone will make the glands in the uterine mucosa grow, uterine hyperemia, thicken the endometrium, and prepare for the implantation of fertilized eggs. After the fertilized egg is implanted, it will produce a placenta, and it will also reduce the excitability of the pregnant uterus, inhibit its activity, and enable the fetus to grow safely.

2. Promote breast development: Progesterone and estrogen can promote the full development of female breasts and make adequate preparations for milk production.

3. Diuresis: This is one of the effects of progesterone. Progesterone competes against aldosterone, can promote the excretion of sodium and chloride ions, and diuresis.
